Venezuela, Colombia Leaders to Convene High-Level Summit

(MENAFN) Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced Wednesday that she had reached an agreement with Colombian President Gustavo Petro to convene a high-level bilateral summit focused on economic, energy, and security cooperation.

"Today I spoke with the President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and we agreed to hold a bilateral meeting at the level of heads of state soon to continue making progress on key issues on the economic, energy and security agendas, within the framework of strengthening cooperation and relations of respect and joint work between our two countries," Rodriguez said via Telegram.

Rodriguez further emphasized that both nations remain committed to fostering mutual understanding and shared prosperity for their citizens, though she stopped short of disclosing a specific date or venue for the anticipated summit.

The announcement comes amid a dramatically shifting geopolitical landscape in the region. Following the U.S. military's capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly branded Petro a "sick man" and raised the specter of military intervention in Colombia — drawing direct parallels to Washington's actions in Caracas.

Tensions appeared to ease considerably in early February, when Petro and Trump met face-to-face in the Oval Office — a diplomatic encounter that had seemed virtually unthinkable just weeks prior — signaling a tentative but notable thaw between the two governments.

Wednesday's development suggests Caracas, now under interim leadership, is moving swiftly to shore up regional alliances as it navigates an unprecedented political transition.
