Trump Says US, Cuba are having Discussions Amid Sanctions Pressure
Speaking to reporters while traveling to Washington, Trump stated, "We're talking to Cuba right now," and indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is leading the diplomatic engagement. He added, "They should absolutely make a deal."
The president described Cuba in stark terms, calling it "a failed nation." He also referenced the broader context of strained relations and economic restrictions, saying, "We'll see how it all turns out. But Cuba and us, we are talking. In the meantime, there's an embargo, there's no oil, there's no money,"
When questioned about the possibility of military action similar to a prior US operation in Venezuela, Trump declined to elaborate. "Why would I answer that? If I was, it wouldn't be a very tough operation, as you can figure, but I don't think that'll be necessary," he said.
The United States has reimposed a comprehensive blockade on Cuba, reiterating its stated objective of ending the island’s communist leadership through various means. In addition to tightening the embargo, Washington has restricted fuel shipments to the country, which has already been grappling with severe supply shortages.
US authorities have previously moved to block oil deliveries to Cuba originating from Mexico and Venezuela. In the Venezuelan case, US forces captured President Nicolas Maduro.
Washington has also signaled that it may apply reciprocal import tariffs on nations that continue providing fuel to Cuba, increasing economic pressure as diplomatic contacts proceed.
