Kremlin Aide Calls for Stronger Response to ‘Western Piracy’
According to reports, the aide, who also leads a major naval policy body, argued that Russia should be prepared to use its naval forces if Western nations attempt to impede its access to key sea routes. He claimed that efforts to disrupt Russian trade will only grow unless there is a “forceful” response.
“Unless we push back forcefully, soon the English, the French, and even the Balts will get brazen enough to try and block our nation’s access to at least the Atlantic,” he said.
He further asserted that European states are moving toward actions that amount to a naval blockade, deliberately escalating toward conflict and testing Russia’s patience. In that context, he warned, “If the situation is not resolved peacefully, the Navy will be breaking and lifting the blockade.”
Looking beyond immediate confrontations, he suggested that Russia might also scrutinize what foreign‑flagged vessels are carrying and where they are headed, noting that “plenty of vessels sail the seas under European flags.”
Expressing little optimism about diplomatic channels, he stated that “there is little hope that the West has an ounce of respect for diplomacy and the law.” He added that “the old practice of ‘gunboat diplomacy’ is being revived,” referencing past foreign military actions targeting Venezuelan and Iranian interests.
The comments came during a period of increased Western action against shipping linked to Russia’s so‑called shadow fleet, including seizures of tankers suspected of violating sanctions. In response, Russian officials have threatened naval deployments to counter such measures, characterizing them as illegitimate efforts to undermine the country’s economic lifelines.
