White House Officials Criticize Machado Over Venezuela Vote Comments
Earlier this week, Machado, who has supported US intervention in Venezuela and the attempted capture of President Nicolas Maduro earlier this year, indicated that elections could potentially occur within nine to ten months.
A senior White House adviser said Machado’s statements “rubbed some people the wrong way” and accused her of “undermining the president’s policy success,” citing accomplishments such as the release of political prisoners and collaborative law-enforcement efforts.
“All Maria Corina Machado does is try to negate all of this… she’s selfish,” the adviser added.
“None of this is ‘Operation Maria Corina Machado.’ It’s ‘Operation US national security,’ which is not tied to her in any way. She’s a spoiler and she’s working against US national security goals.”
Another administration insider suggested that the former congresswoman “shouldn’t be opining on a time frame,” noting that “[24] months is a more realistic time frame.”
The White House emphasized that elections cannot happen “overnight” and would take place “at the right time,” stressing that US President Donald Trump’s main priority is stabilizing the country before a vote occurs.
