Russia Voices Support for Venezuela
Delcy Rodriguez, previously Venezuela's vice president, took the oath Monday as the nation's interim president.
Moscow's Foreign Ministry characterized the transition as evidence of Caracas' resolve to "assure unity" and "mitigate the risks of a constitutional crisis." The statement reaffirmed Russia's "unwavering solidarity with the Venezuelan people and Government."
Russia stands prepared to deliver all necessary assistance to Venezuela, the ministry emphasized.
"We firmly insist that Venezuela should have the guaranteed right to determine its destiny on its own, without any destructive interference from the outside," the ministry stated, insisting that Latin America and the Caribbean "must remain a zone of peace."
Saturday saw Venezuela's Supreme Court direct Rodriguez, who had held the vice presidency since 2018, to assume interim presidential authority.
In remarks following Maduro's detention by US forces, she declared that Venezuela "will never return to being the colony of another empire." Subsequently, Rodriguez signaled openness to engagement with the US provided bilateral relations remained "balanced and respectful."
US President Donald Trump issued a warning to Rodriguez on Sunday, asserting she would face a "bigger price" than her recently captured predecessor "if she doesn't do what's right."
During an emergency UN Security Council session Monday, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia condemned Washington's operations in Venezuela as "international banditry" motivated by ambitions to secure "unlimited control over natural resources."
Moscow previously demanded Maduro's immediate release from US detention.
China, alongside multiple BRICS and Global South nations, has similarly denounced the US actions in Venezuela.
US military forces raided the oil-abundant South American nation last Saturday, seizing Maduro and his wife. The couple was transported to a US warship before being flown to New York. They appeared in court Monday facing drug-trafficking conspiracy charges, entering not guilty pleas to both counts.
